In short
The private transfer from Naples Airport to Positano takes about 1 hour 20 minutes without traffic; on summer weekends allow at least 1 hour 45. By public transport you usually need at least one change (bus to Sorrento and then a bus along the coast, or a seasonal hydrofoil). With an NCC – a licensed private hire service with driver – you book in advance, know the total price beforehand and get dropped at your hotel with your luggage.

How it works
- Request availability. Tell me the date, time and flight number, how many of you there are, how many suitcases and the name of your hotel in Positano.
- Get confirmation within 24 hours. I send you the total price: tolls and parking are already included, with no surprise extras.
- I wait for you at arrivals. As you exit at Capodichino you will see a sign with your name. I help you with your bags and we set off.
- You arrive at your hotel. I drop you at the hotel entrance or at the nearest point reachable by car.
The route and real travel times
From the airport we take the Naples–Salerno motorway to Castellammare di Stabia, then the Sorrento road (statale Sorrentina) along the peninsula and finally the descent towards Positano. Without traffic it takes about 1 hour 20; the slow part is the last few kilometres, narrow and full of bends.
From May to September, especially on Saturdays and Sundays, the Sorrento and Amalfi Coast roads get busy: for the return to the airport I recommend leaving at least 3 and a half hours before your flight. I will suggest the right time when I confirm the service.
- Positano is one-way: the inner road (via Pasitea and via Colombo) runs downhill in one direction only. Many hotels are on it; others can only be reached on foot, by steps.
- If your hotel has steps, I drop you at the nearest car access point; many hotels send a porter, so ask your hotel when you book.
- You can make a stop, for example at a viewpoint or for lunch: mention it in your request and I will include it in the price.
Private transfer, bus or ferry?
| Option | Changes | Luggage | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private NCC transfer | None | Right to the hotel | Families, groups, arrivals with luggage, anyone on a tight schedule |
| Bus to Sorrento + bus to Positano | At least 1 | You carry it; seats not guaranteed on local buses | Light travellers with time to spare |
| Hydrofoil from Naples | Taxi or bus to the port | Boarding and landing by hand | Summer, with calm seas; seasonal timetables |
Public transport timetables and connections change with the seasons: always check them on the transport companies’ websites.
Advice from someone who drives there every week
If you arrive late in the evening, a private transfer is often the only comfortable option: local buses to the Amalfi Coast stop early, and Positano’s steps are no fun in the dark with suitcases.
When alternate number plate rules apply on the Amalfi Coast road, NCC vehicles are still allowed to drive: you don’t need to worry about the plate number.
