Alternate number plates on the Amalfi Coast

In the busiest periods, non-residents’ cars may only use the Amalfi Coast road on alternate days. Here is how it works and how to avoid fines and surprises.

In short

The alternate number plate rule on the SS163 Amalfi Coast road bans non-residents’ vehicles, during certain periods and in daytime hours, based on the last digit of the plate: on odd-numbered days plates ending in an odd number cannot drive, on even-numbered days those ending in an even number. In 2026 the ban applied from 10am to 6pm from 30 March to 6 April and from 24 April to 2 May. Taxis and NCC vehicles are exempt, as are residents and hotel guests with a booking.

How it works

You look at the last digit of the number plate and the day of the month. If the day is odd, cars whose plate ends in an odd digit cannot drive; if the day is even, those whose plate ends in an even digit. Outside the hours of the ban you can drive freely.

The measure applies to the SS163 Amalfi Coast road (statale Amalfitana), which links the towns of the coast from Vietri sul Mare to Positano.

Dates and rules change every year and may be extended: before you travel, check the ordinance in force on the official channels of ANAS and the Amalfi Coast municipalities.

Who can always drive

For the hotel and work exemptions you usually need to be able to show your booking or contract if stopped.

  • Taxis and licensed private hire vehicles with driver (NCC)
  • Residents of the Amalfi Coast municipalities
  • Guests of accommodation with a booking
  • Workers with a contract on the Amalfi Coast
  • Vehicles serving people with disabilities
  • Emergency services and police

How to visit the Amalfi Coast without worries

The simplest way is not to drive: with an NCC private driver the plate doesn’t matter and you don’t need to look for parking in Positano or Amalfi. I drop you at the entrance to each town and pick you up when you have finished.

Alternatively, on ban days you can get around by scheduled bus and ferry, bearing in mind that they are busier precisely in those periods.
