In short
The private transfer from Naples Airport to Amalfi takes about 1 hour 30 minutes without traffic. There are two ways in: over the Chiunzi Pass and down to Maiori, or along the Sorrento Peninsula via Positano. I choose the road based on the time and the day’s traffic. By public transport you need at least two legs, by bus and ferry.

Two roads to Amalfi
There is no single best road: it depends on the time, the day and the season. That is one of the advantages of a driver who knows the area.
- Over the Chiunzi Pass: you leave the motorway at Angri, climb through the Lattari Mountains and descend to Maiori, then follow the coast to Amalfi. It is often the fastest and least congested.
- Via the Sorrento Peninsula: you pass Positano and Praiano along the Amalfi Coast road. More scenic, but slower in summer.
Where I drop you in Amalfi
Amalfi’s centre is pedestrian: cars stop on the seafront, near piazza Flavio Gioia and the port. Hotels on the main road, outside the centre, can be reached directly.
I also cover the villages around it: Atrani, a few minutes’ walk away, Conca dei Marini, Furore and Praiano.
Private transfer or public transport?
By public transport the usual route is bus or train to Salerno or Sorrento, then bus or ferry to Amalfi. It works, but with luggage and changes the day slips away. The ferry is also seasonal and depends on the sea.
A private transfer leaves when you land and goes right to the seafront or your hotel, with tolls and parking already included in the price.
My advice
If your flight lands around midday in summer, consider a lunch stop along the way: in the middle of the day Amalfi is at its most crowded. And if you are leaving Amalfi for the airport, always allow plenty of time: the coast road has no fast alternatives.
