The Roman houses of the Herculaneum excavations

Guide

Pompeii and Herculaneum in one day

The two cities buried by Vesuvius in AD 79 are twenty minutes apart. You can see them together: you just need the right order and no time wasted getting between them.

In short

Yes, you can visit Pompeii and Herculaneum on the same day: Herculaneum takes about 2 hours, Pompeii at least 3–4 for an essential visit, and they are about 20–25 minutes apart by car. The most comfortable order is Herculaneum in the morning, smaller and better preserved, and Pompeii from early afternoon. Buy tickets online on the official websites and wear comfortable shoes: at Pompeii you walk several kilometres.

Why Herculaneum first

Herculaneum is smaller and more compact: in two hours you see it well, with multi-storey houses, carbonised wood and mosaics still in place. It is the best way to understand what a Roman house was like before tackling the vastness of Pompeii.

Pompeii, on the other hand, is an entire city: amphitheatre, forum, baths, streets, shops. In the afternoon you can devote yourself to it alone, without worrying about having to leave.

Practical tips

  • Tickets: buy them online on the official websites of the two parks, especially in high season.
  • Shoes: comfortable and closed, at Pompeii you easily walk 6–8 km.
  • Water and a hat: in summer the sites are very exposed to the sun.
  • Guide: if you want a guided visit, book a licensed tour guide: I will drop you at the entrance where they are waiting.

With a private driver

The Pompeii and Herculaneum tour is one of the services I do most often: I pick you up at your hotel, drop you at the entrance of each site, wait for you and take you back. You just think about the history. If you have the energy, Vesuvius can replace part of the Pompeii visit.
