Pozzuoli in the heart of the Phlegraean Fields

The Greek and Roman city of the Phlegraean Fields, half an hour from Naples: ruins overlooking the sea, a port for Ischia and Procida and a land that still breathes.

The Flavian Amphitheatre in Pozzuoli
History

From Dicaearchia to Puteoli

Founded by Greeks from Samos in the 6th century BC under the name Dicaearchia, under the Romans the city became Puteoli, one of the most important ports of the Roman Mediterranean.

Grain, goods and travellers bound for Rome passed through here: the story is told by the Flavian Amphitheatre, among the largest in Italy, and by the great Roman market known as the Temple of Serapis.

Today

A land that moves

Pozzuoli stands on the Phlegraean Fields, a volcanic area where the ground rises and falls over time: this is bradyseism, visible on the columns of the Temple of Serapis.

The Rione Terra, the ancient acropolis, can be visited along an underground route through the Roman streets. Ferries to Ischia and Procida leave from the port.
