Scala the oldest village on the Amalfi Coast
On the hill facing Ravello, Scala is considered the oldest village on the Amalfi Coast: Romanesque churches, woodland and the Valle delle Ferriere.

Where the coast’s story began
According to tradition, Scala was founded by a group of Romans shipwrecked on the coast. In the Middle Ages it was a wealthy town, with dozens of churches and merchant families trading with the East.
Tradition holds that Blessed Gerard Sasso came from Scala: he founded the Order of the Hospitallers of St John of Jerusalem, today’s Order of Malta.

Woods and silence
Today Scala is a quiet village divided into hamlets, such as Minuta and Pontone, linked by footpaths. The Duomo di San Lorenzo holds a crypt and medieval works of art.
One of the most beautiful trails in the area starts here: the Valle delle Ferriere, a nature reserve of waterfalls and rare ferns that runs down towards Amalfi.
