Salerno between the Amalfi Coast and Cilento
The provincial capital that opens the Amalfi Coast: a tree-lined seafront on the gulf, a medieval old town and the castle that looks out over the whole gulf.

The city of the Medical School
A Roman colony from 194 BC, in the 8th century Salerno became the capital of the Lombard principality of Arechi II, who fortified the city and the castle on the hill.
In the Middle Ages the Salerno Medical School was born here, considered the first school of medicine in Europe. The Normans brought the cathedral, consecrated in 1084 by Pope Gregory VII, who is buried there.

A city by the sea
Lungomare Trieste is where the people of Salerno take their stroll, among palm trees with views of the Amalfi Coast. Behind it you climb into the old town, along Via dei Mercanti and the lanes of the medieval quarter.
From November to January the Luci d’Artista light up streets and gardens and draw visitors from all over Italy. In season, ferries to Amalfi and Positano also leave from the port.
